The Delaware County SPCA is dedicated to
intervention and prevention policies that protect and improve the
health and welfare
of
companion animals and support the people who care for them.
As we settle in to our 101st year of service in 2012, we are
re-dedicating
ourselves
to that mission by becoming a life-saving organization by July of 2012.
We will strive to save as many lives as possible by devoting our
resources to adoption, prevention, education and outreach
programs that:
Prevent animal cruelty and overpopulation
Place animals in caring homes
Promote responsible pet ownership through
education and
affordable animal care services
We are convinced this "lifesaving" policy change
will
make us more effective in fighting the problems that cause animal
overpopulation and suffering in our community. Click here for FAQs including more information about our
prevention programs.
Be on the Front Lines! From time to time, we seek
part-time, flexible help for work
in our cat room/dog kennels and front desk. Working nights,
weekends and having a flexible schedule is a must. So is being a
compassionate animal-lover! If interested, stop in to the Adoption
Center at 555 Sandy Bank
Rd. to fill out an application at the front desk.

History
The Delaware County Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
(SPCA) was established in 1911 originally for the purpose of providing
watering troughs for work horses throughout the county. As the
county expanded to close to 560,000 people, many of them pet owners,
the Delaware County SPCA evolved to serve the ever-changing needs
of the growing
community. Until the end of 2011, the Delco SPCA served as an
“open-admission”
facility, receiving stray animals from the municipalities
in Delaware County that had animal control contracts. In 2012, the
Delaware County municipalities took back their responsibility of
picking up and finding boarding for stray animals, which allows the
Delco SPCA to focus on adoptions and programs that prevent the vast
numbers of stray and neglected animals in Delaware County.
In July 2012, the Delaware County SPCA will be a lifesaving
organization, striving to save every adoptable animal that enters our
Adoption Center, reserving euthanasia only for animals that are
incurably sick or too behaviorally aggressive to be adopted out in to
the community.
Placing deserving animals in loving homes is a continuous focus. In
2011, we adopted 2,808 animals in to forever homes. Our goal for 2012
is to place 3,100 animals in to forever homes. Today, we acquire
animals when owners can no longer care for
their pets and need to turn ownership over to us for adoption;
additionally, we care for animals from cruelty investigations. Finally,
we rescue adoptable animals from high-risk shelters and transfer them
to our Adoption Center to place up for adoption as our space and
resources persist. We are
not breed-specific and have a loyalty to "bully" breeds like Pit Bulls
and other misjudged breeds. We promote responsible ownership by
behaviorally evaluating our animals prior to adoption, and, in some
cases, including training with the adoption. The dedicated staff,
volunteers, and volunteer Board
members work constantly
to promote responsible pet ownership and combat animal
overpopulation through prevention programs such as low-cost public
spay/neuter, community programs like a pet food bank, low-cost vet
care, both onsite and offsite, humane education and humane
investigations.
The Delaware County SPCA is a 501c3 non-profit, charitable organization
registered with the Pennsylvania Department of State. We are not
affiliated with any local, state or federal agency or any other SPCA or
humane group. Our work is supported almost entirely by private
donations.
